What’s New in the IMDS 15.3 Release?

The second IMDS update of 2026, Release 15.3, rolled out on May 11, 2026. It introduced a series of incremental updates focused on usability, data analysis, and administrative oversight.

While not a regulatory-heavy release, 15.3 enhances how users search, interpret, and manage material data within IMDS. Even smaller updates like these can impact day-to-day workflows and data quality, making it important to review and align internal processes to avoid downstream issues with submissions, customer requirements, and compliance expectations.

Here’s what has changed:

1. New Search Criteria for Chemical Presence Type

Users can now refine Where-Used Analysis and Tree Search results based on how a Process Chemical substance is present, such as intended use, impurity, or reaction residue.

Impact:
This added layer of filtering supports more targeted data analysis, helping users better assess material composition and identify substances based on their functional role.

2. More Flexible “Expand Tree” Options

This new feature allows users to expand only a selected node within an MDS, rather than applying expansion settings across the entire structure. Users may also expand only the components of a tree or expand only the branches containing their organization’s MDSs.

Impact:
This improves efficiency when working with complex MDSs, making it easier to isolate and review specific sections without overloading the view.

3. IMDS Request ID Now Searchable in Inbox/Outbox

Request ID is now available as a search field in both sent and received request screens and is now included in search results.

Impact:
This enhances traceability and simplifies communication between suppliers and customers, particularly in high-volume environments.

4. Weekly Alerts for Missed Requests

If no users are subscribed to MDS request notifications, IMDS will now automatically send a weekly summary to company administrators outlining new and upcoming requests.

Impact:
This provides a built-in safeguard against missed requests and helps teams stay on top of deadlines without relying solely on individual notification settings.

5. Password Policy Updates

IMDS has removed the requirement for periodic password resets and will no longer restrict the reuse of previous passwords. Users will now be encouraged to adopt longer, more secure passphrases.

Impact:
This reduces administrative burden while aligning with modern security practices that prioritize stronger, user-friendly authentication methods.

6. Check and Validation Updates

Ceramics/Glass Check Adjustment
Copper is now excluded from validation checks for materials classified as ceramics/glass, reducing unnecessary warnings for high-copper content materials.

REACH Error Message Clarification
Error messages for missing REACH regulatory data will now clearly distinguish between material-level and component-level issues.

Impact:
These refinements improve clarity during validation and help users resolve issues more quickly and accurately.

Final Thoughts

IMDS 15.3 is a usability-focused release that strengthens core system functionality without introducing major regulatory changes. The update supports more efficient data analysis, clearer validation, and improved request management across the supply chain.
